APFEJ Strategy - 2010 to 2012

The Asia-Pacific Forum of Environmental Journalists(APFEJ) is a network and regional association founded in 1988,dedicated to promoting education understanding and awareness of the environment through the honest and accurate reporting of local,regional and international environmental and development issues.It acted as the head of national environmental journalist forums or media organizations of 42 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.The APFEJ ad hoc committee was formed in 1985 at a regional conference on media and environment in Delhi organized by UN-ESCAP in collaboration with the UNEP.Today, APFEJ,is the oldest and largest organization of professional environmental journalists, contacts over 12,000 members around the world.From 12 members at its establishment in 1988, APFEJ has grown to encompass 154 members - of which 42 are from within the Asia and Pacific region and 112 outside. The mission of APFEJ to build into a strong, independent and committed to promote excellence in environmental journalism worldwide by supporting environmental journalists specially Asia pacific through Professionalism, Freedom of expression, Social responsibility, environmental justice, Networking and training.

To promote excellence in environmental journalism.

Mission
To motivate and assist national forums and related bodies to form a strong and efficient network to promote and protect sustainable development through environmental journalism.

Objectives

•  To create and promote awareness on environmental issues among the public
•  To provide journalists with information and resources in order to encourage them to write on the environment

•  To provide journalists with comprehensive information on environmental issues

•  To make APFEJ a financially stable, effective and efficient networking organization

•  To educate journalists on environmental reporting to enhance their professionalism and credibility

•  To co-operate with other NGOs and improve the cause of protecting the environment

•  To bring environmental journalism into the mainstream media

•  To promote greater awareness of environmental issues among journalists in the Asia-Pacific region

•  To organize dialogues with decision-makers in the media with a view to having greater emphasis on environmental issues

•  To encourage greater exchange of ideas and information on environmental issues in the region among journalists

•  To promote the activities of its members

Organizational Structure - Secretariat of APFEJ

Positions - Chair, Deputy -Chair, Regional Directors and Genaral Secretary
Full-time staff - Managing Editor, Program Director & Documentation Manager
Two regional officers: Asia - Kasakastan and Pacific - Fiji
International head office based in Colombo - Sri Lanka.

Plan of Operation for year 2010 - 2012

•  On line Publications on specific issues
•  Maintain and develop APFEJ website
•  Fundraising - aim for endowment funds of US$2 million for three years
•  Assist national forums by providing environmental resources.
   This includes producing three manuals for environmental reporting
•  Expansion and strenthing of APFEJ to all countries in Asia-Pacific region.
   Expand membership to countries    in the Central Asia
•  Establish permanent secretariat in Sri Lanka
•  Compile success stories on environment and sustainable development.
   At least one success story from each national forum annually for publication
•  Environmental journalists reporting study tours. Two programs annually
•  Annual environmental journalist's awards. One per year.
   Promote the awards via press releases through entire region
•  Training courses for national forum members and journalists.
   Three per year in member countries (rotational basis)
•  Assist national forums to generate resources and funding by helping compile project proposals
•  Amend constitution as needed before the 2010 Fiji Congress
•  Hold annual general assembly/congress. 2010 - Fiji, 2011 – Kazakhstan and 2012 . Nepal
•  Hold an Asia-Pacific Green TV Film Competition and Eco-Film Festival
•  Hold an Environmental Photo Competition and on line exhibition, annually.
